MAQUI BERRY

A Native Treasure of Patagonia

The Maqui Berry (Aristotelia chilensis) is an evergreen tree that grows wild in the temperate forests of southern Chile and Argentina. Belonging to the Elaeocarpaceae family, it thrives in the humid valleys and coastal ranges of Patagonia, where abundant rainfall, volcanic soils, and clean air create ideal conditions for its growth.

The Maqui plant can reach up to five meters in height, with small leaves, delicate white-to-pink flowers, and clusters of deep purple berries that ripen between December and March in the Southern Hemisphere.

Its growth is closely tied to the native ecosystems of southern Chile, where it contributes to biodiversity and natural soil regeneration.

For centuries, native communities have recognized its value — using its fruits, bark, and leaves for nutritional and medicinal purposes, and honoring the Maqui tree as a symbol of strength, protection, and renewal.

The Maqui Tree and Its Fruit

The Maqui tree is uniquely adapted to the demanding natural environments of Patagonia, capable of withstanding cold temperatures, strong winds, and variable rainfall — a reflection of the region’s resilience.

Its fruit, small and round with an intense violet color, contains pigments known as anthocyanins, particularly delphinidins, responsible for its powerful antioxidant activity and vibrant hue.

When fully ripe, Maqui berries have a sweet yet slightly tart flavor and have traditionally been used to prepare juices, jams, and natural infusions.

Beyond their taste, these berries represent a deep connection between nature and human well-being, embodying the purity and vitality of the Patagonian landscape.

Ecological Importance

Beyond their nutritional value, Maqui trees play an essential role in their native ecosystem. They provide food for local fauna, stabilize soil, and naturally regenerate after environmental disturbances — making them key contributors to Patagonia’s ecological balance.

This natural resilience and adaptability are part of what make Maqui exceptional: a species that mirrors the vitality of the environment it grows in.

  • Maqui contains exceptionally high levels of delphinidins, a type of anthocyanin with the strongest antioxidant activity in nature. This gives it a deeper purple color and superior antioxidant capacity compared to other berries.
  • They are powerful natural antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress, support metabolic health, and contribute to skin vitality. Maqui is the richest known natural source of delphinidins.
  • It grows wild in the southern regions of Chile, within the Andean valleys of Patagonia — a pristine ecosystem that cannot be replicated anywhere else on Earth.
  • Yes. Maqui grows naturally and is hand-harvested during a short fruiting season. MNL Group ensures sustainable sourcing in partnership with local communities and trusted suppliers.
  • While fresh or dried berries can be used in foods, teas, or natural preparations, most of Maqui’s benefits come from its standardized extracts, which concentrate the fruit’s active compounds for specific applications.

    • For human consumption: MNL’s proprietary ingredients — Delphinol® and Maquibright® — are used in nutraceuticals, dietary supplements, functional beverages, and skincare  supplements.

    • For animal nutrition: Futerpenol™ is a specialized formulation with Maqui extract developed for the aquaculture industry -salmon farming-, where it supports oxidative balance and overall health in fish.
