MORE ABOUT MAQUI BERRY

Science Behind Maqui

From nature to clinical validation — uncovering the molecular science that powers Maqui Berry’s extraordinary antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential.

Over 15 years of clinical and pre-clinical research have confirmed the unique biological activity of Maqui’s delphinidins — molecules that connect the resilience of Patagonia with the future of nutraceutical Maqui Berry science.

SCIENCE BEHIND MAQUI BERRY

From Discovery to Scientific Validation

For centuries, the Maqui Berry was revered by local Patagonian communities as a source of vitality and endurance.
Today, modern science has confirmed what tradition long observed: Maqui Berry contains the highest concentration of delphinidins found in any known fruit — up to 1,260 mg per 100 g of raw fruit, compared to just 97 mg in bilberries and 70 mg in grapes.

This exceptional profile translates into one of the world’s most powerful antioxidant performances, measured at 28,200 ORAC units, or 7× more than Açai and 9× more than Goji.

Maqui’s anthocyanin profile is composed of approximately 75 % delphinidins and 25 % cyanidins, giving it its deep violet pigment and superior bioactivity.

These findings inspired MNL Group to pioneer standardized Maqui extracts that deliver consistent potency, purity, and scientifically validated results.
SCIENCE BEHIND MAQUI BERRY

The Power of Delphinidins

Delphinidins — a subclass of anthocyanins — are responsible for Maqui’s intense color and its remarkable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity.

They are recognized as the most potent natural anthocyanins, capable of scavenging over 40 % of DPPH radicals within 4 minutes, outperforming cyanidin and pelargonidin.

Their molecular structure enables them to:

  • Neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibit lipid peroxidation.
  • Downregulate NF-κB, reducing inflammatory responses.
  • Activate PPARγ receptors, improving glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity.

Laboratory studies also confirm full-spectrum antioxidant activity, neutralizing all five major reactive oxygen species — peroxyl, hydroxyl, peroxynitrite, singlet oxygen, and superoxide — with an ORAC 5.0 value of 30,852 µmol Trolox equivalents/g (Brunswick Labs, USA).

Mechanisms of Action

Antioxidant Defense

Neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) to protect cells from oxidative damage.

ORAC 5.0 showed full-spectrum activity at 30,852 µmol TE/g.

Inflammatory Modulation

Downregulates NF-κB pathways to help control chronic inflammation.

In vivo study: Delphinol® reduced edema by 35%, similar to diclofenac.

Metabolic Regulation

Inhibits α-glucosidase and activates PPARγ to support glucose management.

Clinical trial: HbA1c decreased from 5.65% to 5.35% in 90 days.

Dry Eye Protection

Reduces UV / blue-light oxidative eye stress and tear production.

Our product, MaquiBright®, increased tear secretion by 25% vs placebo in 4 weeks.
