Delphinidins are the anthocyanin subclass responsible for Maqui's deep violet color, and the reason this fruit is recognized as one of the most studied natural antioxidant sources of the Southern Hemisphere. These pigments are produced by the plant itself as natural protection against sun radiation and environmental stress — the same compounds behind Maqui's antioxidant capacity.
